Popes and Saints of the Marche Region on display at Castel Sant'Angelo in Rome in 2024/2025
03/10/24 – 02/03/25 Castel Sant’Angelo
Through an exhibition rich in documents, works of art and historical testimonies, the initiative highlights the influence that the popes and saints originating from this land have exerted on Italian ecclesiastical and artistic culture. The exhibition offers a deep look at the crucial role of the Marche in the religious, artistic and spiritual fabric of our country.
Among the most valuable items on display are portraits, medals, engravings and sacred objects belonging to popes and saints of the Marche. The figure of Pope Sixtus V, for example, is told through the tabernacle of El Greco, while the lives of saints such as San Nicola da Tolentino and Santa Maria Goretti are illustrated with unpublished works of rare beauty.
The route winds through biographies, cult elements and historical testimonies, offering visitors the opportunity to admire also the precious Evangelario di San Marcellino, dating from the sixth century.
Another section of the exhibition is dedicated to the sacred itineraries of the Marche, which lead to the discovery of hermitages, shrines and abbeys scattered in the territory of the Marche. Through ancient maps, plants and drawings, we outline spiritual paths that for centuries have accompanied pilgrims in search of places of reflection and inner connection.
