The catacombs of Rome are ancient underground cemetery areas built by both the Jewish and Christian communities in the suburbs of the city of Rome starting from the end of the 2nd century. They are characterized by a network of tunnels dug into the rock (mostly tuff), sometimes divided into several superimposed levels, with burial niches dug into the walls and less frequently with deposits dug into the pavement.
