The amphitheatre was built in the Flavian era on an area on the eastern edge of the Roman Forum. Its construction, begun by Vespasian in 70 AD, was completed by Titus, who inaugurated it on 21 April 80 AD. Further modifications were made during the reign of Domitian, in 90 AD.
